What to wear

One of the most oft-asked questions I get from clients is, “What should we wear?” I know it seems like a daunting thing, picking out the outfit(s) that will be documented forever in your family photos. But, don’t fret!! I’m going to spell it all out for you here.  Of course, my answer to this question is very different from most photographers. If you want detailed outfit ideas, I recommend searching Pinterest. My recommendations involve no searching and no shopping.

Rule #1:  Wear something you feel great in. Okay, so that’s my only rule. My goal is to have you look back on these photos in 20 years and be taken back to this exact time in your life. Not the hour or so we spent taking pictures, but the weeks and months surrounding your session. What I DON’T want is for you to look back on these pictures and think, “Oh, yeah. I remember spending $200 on that outfit my kiddo never wore again.” It happens.

Rule #2:  There is no Rule #2. Please see and follow Rule #1. Then, enjoy your session and enjoy your beautiful photos.

I have carefully phrased these rules so that you don’t show up in yoga pants and big tee shirts. Yes, they’re comfortable but you don’t feel GREAT in them. If you DO show up in yoga pants, I will still take beautiful portraits of you. Guaranteed (:

Exceptions to Rule #1:  It’s important to know the rules before you break them, so now that you have all the rules down, here is the exception. Holidays and special occasions often call for special outfits. Wedding dresses, Easter dresses, prom dresses, (and, yes, holiday cards if you want be in festive garb). So, yes. Those types of photos call for special clothing.  HOWEVER. Bring a change of clothes with you, and take advantage of your session time by getting some “regular” images too! I’m more than happy to do that for you while I have you captive (:

I purposely chose a photo for this post where the clothing wasn’t prominent. We were all dressed in hiking clothes and boots, meaning clothes we didn’t mind getting dirty. We still managed to get lots of beautiful photos that captured the day perfectly, including this one.

Okay. That’s it. Sorry if you’re disappointed that I didn’t give you an excuse to go shopping! Spend that money on a family outing and enjoy some family time. Because THAT is what’s important, my friends.
